Words has it that Olympic Games is no longer as prestigious as it used to be. In recent decades, such international games have been marred with rumor of corruptions, slow construction and other negativities, but that doesn’t stop businesses from wanting a piece of the quadrennial game. Not surprisingly, South Korea giant Samsung is one of them. Being the “Worldwide Olympic Partner in the Wireless Communications Equipment,” it is only natural that the electronics maker has at least one piece of limited edition hardware to show, which in this case, it is an Olympic themed Samsung flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Limited Edition.
The limited edition device bears hint of Olympics through the use of colors: black, which is the device overall color, red power button, green volume rocker, blue on the camera and flash ring, while yellow can be found on the earpiece and home button trims. If the colors didn’t immediately ring the Olympics bell, there’s a blue Olympic logo slapped on back with the words “Worldwide Partner” below it to remind of the Rio 2016. The Olympics theme continues in the user interface, along with preloaded Rio 2016 Olympic Games themed wallpapers for good measure.
Samsung will be providing 12,500 units of the limited edition smartphone, along with Gear IconX to the competing athletes to, in Samsung’s words, “enhance their experiences in Rio and communicate with family and friends around the world more conveniently.” But the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Games Limited Edition is not limited to Olympians; 2,016 units will be available to other mortals in select countries, which includes Brazil, U.S., China, Germany and Korea, starting July 18, 2016.
