United Sciences The Aware Custom-fit Headphone

Music and body metrics measurement does not go hand-in-hand, but what if it could? Well, such is what the United Sciences The Aware Custom-fit Headphone proposed to do: providing users with a pair of custom-fit, wireless in-ear headphone that not only lets users listen to music, but also measure their body metrics, as well as monitor performance if the user is exercising. It can even monitor your sleep data too. Unlike a pair of conventional earphones which only is equipped with drivers, The Aware is also packed with biometric sensors that picks up data such as brainwave activity (though EEG), heart rate, steps, distance traveled, calories burned and more.

In addition, it can also track a person’s focus, stress level, as well as track sleep cycles with the help of data as told by the user’s brain. The only caveat is, the earbuds have to be in your ears as you sleep and we are not sure if it is all that comfortable to do so. Anywho, the collected data is accessible through an app installed on the user’s smartphone. In a way, The Aware kind of help you achieve one less thing to wear when in the gym and if you look at it in another perspective, music lovers will get the boon of having their basic biometrics measured as they are listening to their favorite tunes.

Leveraging on the company’s 3D hole scanning process to create earphones that’s customized to an individual sound holes, The Aware promised to deliver fitting earphones, while dishing out high-fidelity audio through its balanced armature drivers, streamed from Bluetooth-enabled source, or from the onboard 16GB storage. Despite its rather diminutive size, the setup still packs a whole of miniaturized electronics, including the said storage, Digital Signal Processor, Bluetooth module, a standard headphone jack (yes, even this!), a battery pack, microphone array with 3D ambient awareness and noise cancellation, 9-axis accelerometer, Pulse Ox sensor, and custom electrodes.

Though it is worthy to note that not all those mentioned are packed inside the earbuds; some of those, like the battery pack, goes into an inline device found midway of the cable that connects the left and right earbud.

United Sciences The Aware Custom-fit Headphone is on Kickstarter, which it has four days on the calendar. The campaign has already met its funding goal, which means from now till May 29 (or 30, depending on where you are), a pledge of $99 will secure yourself a pair, slated for delivery in September 2016.
