Monsters have no business writing. They don’t need pens. But fans of monsters—those raised on decades of horror films and pop culture certainly do. And if you’re the type who appreciates a good writing instrument with a bit of cinematic flair, Montegrappa has something for you.
The Italian pen maker is back with another round of Universal Monsters-inspired writing instruments. If the names Dracula and Frankenstein sound familiar in Montegrappa’s lineup, you are not imagining things. The brand previously released limited-edition pens dedicated to the two horror legends. Those were stunning pieces, but they also commanded prices that could scare the living daylights out of your wallet.
Enter the Montegrappa Universal Monsters O.E. collection. This time around, the pens are far more approachable. In fact, they are affordable enough that a determined collector could pick up all three designs and still spend less than the earlier Dracula or Frankenstein limited editions.
And yes, there are three monsters to choose from: Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Each pen features a brass and aluminum body finished with dark IP coatings, layered lacquers, and vintage-style decals that channel the eerie atmosphere of Universal’s classic monster films.
Dracula
The Dracula edition immediately stands out with its deep crimson cap. A gold clip bearing the Count’s crest and visage sits proudly up top, giving the pen a suitably aristocratic look. Remove the cap, and you’ll find a matching crimson grip paired with a barrel textured to resemble the brickwork of the Count’s castle. Subtle, but unmistakably gothic.
Frankenstein
Naturally, the Frankenstein version goes all in on green. The barrel carries printed suture motifs, while the cap features an electrode-shaped clip that nods to the infamous laboratory experiment that brought the creature to life. Pull the cap off, and the same vivid green grip greets you.
The Creature from the Black Lagoon
Then there is The Creature from the Black Lagoon, arguably the most visually interesting of the trio. The barrel is finished with a scaly texture inspired by the amphibious monster itself, while the clip takes the form of a claw. It looks ready to grab hold of your notes—or perhaps your sanity.
Each pen also carries the monster’s logotype on the cap, just in case anyone nearby needs a reminder of the horror icon you’re channeling while signing documents.
Pricing and availability
The Universal Monsters O.E. collection is available as fountain pens, rollerballs, and ballpoint pens, with options for stainless steel or 14-karat gold nibs. Prices range from €475 to €950 (around US$545 to US$1,089) depending on the configuration.
Not bad for writing instruments inspired by creatures that once terrorized movie audiences. Now they just haunt your desk instead.
