art student made swim goggles using fish scales

(credit: Erik de Laurens)

i didn’t think fish scales would have any use other than going straight into the trash. however, one art student by the name of Erik de Laurens from the Royal College of Art explored the idea of using fish scales as material for more useful items in life. using just heat and pressure, Erik managed to bond the scales together without adding any bonding agents. the resultant material is what he dubs as “fish scale plastic” which were then used to create items like swim goggles, tumblers and eyeglass frames and even a table with an inlay of a fish. more images of Erick de Laurens’ work of art after the break.
