Mahjong can already become serious business when family pride is involved. Singapore-based Imperial Harvest has now raised the stakes considerably with a one-of-one Imperial Feng Shui Mahjong Set valued at US$1,888,888. At that valuation, accidentally dropping a tile may require more than an apology. Possibly a financial adviser.
Created under the direction of Grand Master David Goh, the set consists of 156 tiles carved from 100% natural, untreated Burmese Grade A Black Jadeite. Imperial Harvest selected the stone for its rarity and its traditional associations with protection, grounding, and wealth accumulation. In other words, even the materials have arrived with career goals.
The tiles live inside a bespoke trunk wrapped in Himalayan Niloticus crocodile leather, prized for its natural gradient resembling snow-covered peaks. Inside, aerospace-grade Alcantara provides a soft, non-slip, and non-abrasive resting place for the jadeite. The material is also used in Ferrari and Lamborghini interiors, although neither marque usually carries 156 Mahjong tiles in the glove compartment.
This is not merely a familiar Mahjong set recreated with extraordinarily expensive materials. Imperial Harvest has redesigned several tiles according to its Imperial Feng Shui principles.
The conventional Singaporean rooster, centipede, cat, and rat animal tiles have been replaced by the Four Celestial Guardians: the Azure Dragon, Vermilion Phoenix, White Tiger, and Black Tortoise. The flower tiles now feature a bat, deer, crane, and magpie, representing fortune, prosperity, longevity, and happiness.
Meanwhile, the Seven Dots tile uses a “Seven Star Lighting” configuration intended to promote stability, clarity, and strategic wisdom. You will still have to decide which tile to discard yourself. Feng Shui has boundaries.
For international readability, the traditional Chinese Character suit has also been rendered using English typography, with names such as Yi Wan, Er Wan, and San Wan. It is an East-meets-West detail for the global collector whose Mahjong table may require its own security team.
The repeated eights in the US$1,888,888 valuation symbolize boundless and infinite prosperity. Only one set will ever be made, although the release does not explain whether it will be sold privately, auctioned, or presented through another arrangement. So do not expect an “Add to Cart” button followed by free standard shipping.
Most importantly, all proceeds from the eventual sale will be donated to DIPG Foundation Singapore, which supports research into pediatric brain cancers, assists affected children and families, and helps expand access to clinical trials and emerging treatments.
It may be the most financially intimidating game night imaginable, but at least the money is destined for something far more meaningful than the world’s most luxurious round of Mahjong.
