There are two kinds of window air conditioners. The first is the kind that turns your window into a permanent wall while humming loud enough to remind you it’s working. The second? Well, until a few years ago, there wasn’t one.
Enter the Midea U, an air conditioner that dares to ask a simple question: what if the window could still be… a window?
Instead of sitting awkwardly inside the room like a traditional window AC, the Midea U features, as its name suggests, a giant U-shaped design. The window slides down through the middle of the unit, leaving the noisy compressor outside while the quieter air outlet stays indoors. It operates as low as 32 dBA, which is a very quiet bedroom at night, or the hum of a modern computer fan. The result is a cooler room, a quieter home, and the ability to crack open the window whenever the weather decides to be nice again.
The clever design also creates a tighter seal around the window, helping keep hot air, dust, and unwanted noise where they belong—outside. Better yet, the Midea U is inverter-equipped, making it considerably more energy-efficient than the window air conditioners many of us grew up with.
Being smart doesn’t hurt either. The Midea U supports app control, voice assistants, and scheduling, so you can have your room nicely chilled before you even get home. It is one of those rare smart home features that feels genuinely useful instead of simply giving you another excuse to talk to your appliances.
The Midea U proves that innovation doesn’t always mean reinventing the wheel. Sometimes, all it takes is cutting a giant U into an air conditioner and making everyone wonder why nobody thought of it sooner.
The Midea U is not new. It has been around for several years and has since received a few updates. While I don’t believe it is officially sold in many markets, we did find what appears to be the latest generation listed in the official Midea Store on Amazon, available in 8,000 BTU, 10,000 BTU, and 12,000 BTU variants. Better yet, pricing is surprisingly reasonable, ranging from US$399.99 to around US$550.
