Lunartic belt-drive bicycle makes hubless wheel a reality

(credit: Loughborough University/Lunartic)

no, Lunartic is not a person gone nuts. it is probably the first bicycle that has a working hubless wheel. Lunartic is a project from Loughborough Design School student Luke Douglas. the design combines different tire sizes with belt drive and tubless (and hubless) rear wheel. according to its designer, putting the moving parts within the rear wheel space creates “a product that is the size of a small wheel bicycle but with the comfort and performance of one with a large wheel.”

it may not look like the coolest bike in town but the fact that it has a working hubless wheel for a bicycle has won me over in a sec. i certainly hope the working principle will be adopted and see production eventually. of course, the frame could be further improve on. just having rough aluminum cuts is not going to get it anywhere. we need some styling!
