Volkswagen R is going back to where the “R” in its name actually matters: racing. To celebrate the performance brand’s 25th anniversary, Volkswagen R has confirmed it will enter the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 2027 with an all-wheel drive Golf R race car developed together with Max Kruse Racing.
A show car called the Golf R 24H is already teasing what is coming, and while Volkswagen is keeping the technical details close to the chest for now, the company is promising the “most spectacular Golf R to date.” Which, frankly, is a bold statement considering the Nürburgring tends to turn marketing claims into mechanical failures pretty quickly. Just saying…
The project follows three years of Nürburgring competition with the Golf GTI Clubsport and marks a return to all-wheel drive competition for Volkswagen R. Benjamin Leuchter, co-founder of Max Kruse Racing and longtime Volkswagen development driver, will also play a major role in the car’s setup and development.
