Volkswagen R is going back to where the “R” in its name actually matters: racing. To celebrate the performance brand’s 25th anniversary, Volkswagen R has confirmed it will enter the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 2027 with an all-wheel drive Golf R race car developed together with Max Kruse Racing.
A show car called the Golf R 24H is already teasing what is coming, and while Volkswagen is keeping the technical details close to the chest for now, the company is promising the “most spectacular Golf R to date.” Which, frankly, is a bold statement considering the Nürburgring tends to turn marketing claims into mechanical failures pretty quickly. The project follows three years of Nürburgring competition with the Golf GTI Clubsport and marks a return to all-wheel drive competition for Volkswagen R. Benjamin Leuchter, co-founder of Max Kruse Racing and longtime Volkswagen development driver, will also play a major role in the car’s setup and development.
