I always find it strange that someone who is health-conscious would even consider drinking soda. But here we are in the age of Zero, where everything seems to have a Zero attached to it. Coke Zero. Pepsi Zero. Sugar Zero. Caffeine Zero. Pretty soon, we’ll probably have Zero Zero.
But the Zero trend had, until now, stopped at beverages because a popular breakfast food has just gone Zero, too. Folks, meet Eggo Zero. And yes, it is that Eggo, the waffles that Stranger Things made a whole new generation fall in love with.
The new Eggo Zero Waffles are exactly what the name suggests: Eggo’s first waffles with 0 grams of added sugar. Better still, they get there without artificial sweeteners, flavors, or colors. Instead, the sweetness comes from monk fruit and stevia extracts, proving that “Zero” does not necessarily mean sacrificing taste.
Available in Buttermilk and Blueberry, the new waffles retain Eggo’s familiar golden-crispy outside and fluffy inside while packing in 12 grams of complete protein per serving for Buttermilk and 11 grams for Blueberry. The latter also throws real blueberries into the mix, because apparently “Zero” does not apply to fruit.
If you are wondering whether these waffles still deserve the classic “L’Eggo My Eggo!” slogan, Eggo certainly thinks so. The company says the goal was to deliver the nostalgic Eggo experience without the added sugar, and if it succeeds, breakfast lovers may finally have a guilt-free excuse to hit the toaster one more time.
Eggo Zero Waffles will roll out at retailers across the U.S. this July for a suggested retail price of US$5.99 per eight-count box.
