Samsung has had a folding device since 2019, and two folding phones since 2020. But this year is different. It now has three Z phones: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, and Flip8.
Joining the regular Z Fold and Z Flip is a new wide, squat, passport-style layout Z Fold—Samsung’s first wide-display foldable, similar to the Huawei Pura X Max. You might be anticipating this boldest physical redesign to be called the “Z Fold Ultra.” Well, nope.
Perhaps the wildest thing about this announcement isn’t even the wide foldable—it’s the name change. The new traditional tall and narrow book-style form factor is now, wait for it, called the Z Fold8 Ultra, breaking the naming convention Samsung has used since 2020.
Samsung retroactively added the “Z” moniker to the line in 2020 after the first folding flip phone, the Z Flip. So it has been “Z Fold” ever since… well, until this week.
I know it’s none of my business, but I am really not liking this name change. I guess Samsung’s traditional mindset dictates that “Ultra” must be a symbol of top-tier specs, which the tall folding phone is. Well, they could have used “Max,” but I guess that also implies better specs. Or they could have given both form factors the same specs and let users decide based on shape. Or maybe, just maybe, “Max” works, but they are just too proud to follow anyone else’s footsteps.
Anyhoo, keep reading for a quick rundown of the features and specs for each new device.
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is Samsung’s new flagship foldable, featuring a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate on an 8-inch QXGA+ (2,504 x 2,256 pixels) Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display. It’s optimized for multitasking and productivity (or, as I see many people using it for, consuming short videos—yes, short videos, not even movies or TV series). The main display reaches 3,000 nits of peak brightness, while including Vision Booster on both panels and a low-reflection finish for improved outdoor visibility. Meanwhile, the cover screen (a.k.a. the external display) is a 6.5-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X FHD+ (1,080 x 2,520 pixels) panel with a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate.
The device brings Flex Titanium display technology to the table, which Samsung claims reduces crease visibility while improving overall durability. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, paired with up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of internal storage. No official word on the exact memory and storage speeds yet, at least not that we know of.
In the imaging department, it sports a rear triple-camera array featuring a 200 MP wide-angle camera with Quad Pixel AF, OIS, f/1.7, 0.6 μm pixel size, an 85˚ field of view, and 2X optical-quality zoom. This is accompanied by a 50 MP ultra-wide camera with Quad Pixel AF, f/1.9, 0.7 μm pixel size, and a 120˚ field of view, as well as a 10 MP telephoto camera with PDAF, OIS, f/2.4, 1.0 μm pixel size, a 36˚ field of view, and 3X optical zoom. Both the cover camera and the main inner camera use 10 MP sensors with an f/2.2 aperture and 1.12 μm pixel size, with the cover lens featuring an 85° field of view and the main inner lens offering a wider 100° field of view.
It packs a 5,000 mAh battery that supports both wired fast charging and wireless charging (20 W), as well as Wireless PowerShare. Other notable specs include an IP48 rating, 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6.0. The new Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is remarkably thin and lightweight, measuring 72.8 x 158.4 x 8.9 mm when folded, 143.2 x 158.4 x 4.1 mm when opened up, and tipping the scales at just 215 grams.
Galaxy Z Fold8
The Galaxy Z Fold8 adopts an all-new form factor with a 10:16 cover display and a 4:3 main display, designed to better suit everyday content consumption. It also benefits from Flex Titanium technology, a 3,000-nit main display, Vision Booster on both screens, and a low-reflection coating. The cover display is a 5.5-inch WUXGA (1,248 x 1,972 pixels) Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate. Unfolding it reveals a 7.6-inch QXGA+ (1,848 x 2,448 pixels) Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, also running at an adaptive 120 Hz.
Unsurprisingly, it is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, with up to 16 GB of memory and up to 1 TB of storage. The battery, however, has a slightly smaller capacity at 4,800 mAh, supporting 20 W wired and wireless charging plus Wireless PowerShare.
For imaging, it carries a rear dual-camera system featuring a 50 MP wide-angle camera with Dual Pixel AF, OIS, f/1.8, 1.0 μm pixel size, an 85° field of view, and 2X optical-quality zoom, paired with a 50 MP ultra-wide camera with Quad Pixel AF, f/1.9, 0.7 μm pixel size, and a 120˚ field of view. As for the front-facing optics, both the cover and main inner cameras are carried directly over from the Ultra.
Other key details include an IP48 rating, 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6.0. When folded, the Galaxy Z Fold8 measures 81.9 x 123.9 x 9.7 mm. When unfolded, it expands to 161.4 x 123.9 x 4.5 mm, weighing in at just 201 grams.
Galaxy Z Flip8
The Galaxy Z Flip8 focuses on maximum portability and personalization. Its redesigned FlexWindow has evolved into an AI-native interface, bringing apps, quick actions, and personalized information directly to the cover display without needing to open the phone. Samsung has also expanded Now Brief, allowing for more personalized insights and customizable briefing cards right on the outer screen.
Under the hood, it uses Samsung’s custom silicon: the Exynos 2600. Fundamentally, it remains a top-tier flagship processor, but with a focus on multi-core performance and thermal efficiency. It is manufactured on Samsung’s cutting-edge 2nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) process. The chip is bolstered by 12 GB of memory with up to 512 GB of storage.
The Z Flip8 features a 6.9-inch FHD+ (1,080 x 2,520 pixels) Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display with a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and Vision Booster. Meanwhile, the cover screen is a 4.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a 948 x 1,048 resolution and a 60/120 Hz dynamic refresh rate, also benefiting from Samsung’s Vision Booster technology.
In the camera department, it features a dual rear setup with a 50 MP wide-angle camera (Dual Pixel AF, OIS, f/1.8, 1.0 μm pixel size, 85˚ FoV, 2X optical-quality zoom) and a 12 MP ultra-wide camera (f/2.2, 1.12 μm pixel size, 123° FoV). Rounding out the optics is a 10 MP selfie camera with an f/2.2 aperture, 1.12 μm pixel size, and an 85° field of view.
The new Z Flip8 is outfitted with a 4,300 mAh battery that supports both wired and wireless fast charging (15 W), plus Wireless PowerShare. Additional features include an IP48 rating, 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.4. It measures a compact 75.4 x 85.7 x 13.1 mm when folded, opens up to 75.4 x 166.9 x 6.1 mm, and is exceptionally light at just 180 grams.
Galaxy AI (But, of course!)
Across all three devices, Samsung continues to expand its Galaxy AI ecosystem.
On the Fold8 Ultra and standard Fold8, users can take advantage of Now Nudge, which allows AI results to stay pinned and visible alongside ongoing tasks on the large inner displays. Meanwhile, the Flip8’s FlexWindow makes quick AI interactions far more accessible without unfolding the phone.
Pricing and Availability
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8 became available for pre-order in select markets starting July 22, 2026.
