GoPro Just Made an 8K Cinema Camera (Yes, Really) 🎬

GoPro MISSION 1 PRO compact cinema camera shooting 8K open gate video

If you are still wondering how far technology has progressed, well, just take a look at the imaging industry. In the past, making a movie required huge and cumbersome equipment; now all you need is a GoPro. Not just any GoPro, though. The GoPro MISSION 1 PRO line of professional 8K and 4K open gate, compact cinema cameras.

Yes, cinema cameras. From GoPro. And it sure has our full attention.

The new MISSION 1 PRO series marks a serious shift for the brand that used to live happily on helmets and surfboards. These are built around a 50-megapixel 1-inch sensor paired with GoPro’s new GP3 processor, which together unlock proper filmmaker territory like 14 stops of dynamic range, 10-bit GP-Log2 color, and clean low-light performance that earlier GoPros simply could not deliver.

Video is where things get wild. The MISSION 1 PRO can shoot 8K at up to 60 fps, 4K at up to 240 fps, and even 1080p at 960 fps if you feel like slowing reality down to a crawl. It also supports Open Gate recording, which means extra framing flexibility for vertical edits, cropping, or pretending you planned the shot that way all along.

And then there is the size. Despite all this cinema-grade ambition, GoPro still insists on keeping things compact, rugged, waterproof to about 20 meters, and very much ready to be strapped somewhere questionable.

For creators who want even more control, the MISSION 1 PRO ILS version goes one step further by adding a Micro Four Thirds lens mount, opening the door to real interchangeable lenses—something nobody expected from a GoPro not that long ago.

Battery life gets a boost too, with the new Enduro 2 pack supporting hours of continuous recording, which means fewer interruptions and fewer dramatic “camera overheated” moments mid-take.

The MISSION 1 PRO cameras are GoPro stepping into cinema territory without abandoning the rugged DNA that made the brand famous in the first place. They are small, tough, and suddenly very serious about filmmaking. Which is not something anyone used to say about a GoPro—and yet, here we are. 🎬📷

Now, for the eager filmmakers out there who are raring to give the GoPro tiny cinema camera a go, you can reserve one now. Be warned, though. It is not going to be cheap. You are looking at US$599.99 for the MISSION 1, US$699.99 for the MISSION 1 PRO, and a grand US$699.99 for MISSION 1 PRO ILS. There is also a MISSION 1 Pro Grip Edition, too, though I did see it being listed, so we do not know the price.

Anyhoo, the MISSION 1, MISSION 1 PRO, and MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition will be available for pre-order starting May 21, 2026

The MISSION 1 PRO ILS is not alone, btw. It will also be joined by a MISSION 1 Pro Creator Edition and a MISSION 1 Pro Ultimate Creator Edition in Q3 2026. However, prices for the latter two are not known.
