After 2 years and a minor spec update in between, the Huawei Mate XT finally welcomes a follow-up. Folks, meet the Huawei Mate XT 2, the latest tri-fold phone to join Huawei’s growing portfolio of folding phones.
Huawei calls its redesigned arrangement the new “wing-style tri-fold.” Closed, you get a 6.5-inch OLED display with a 1–120Hz adaptive refresh rate and 2442 × 1140 resolution. Unfold all three sections, and it becomes a 10.2-inch OLED tablet with a 2232 × 3184 resolution. The standard inner display refreshes at up to 90Hz, while privacy-screen versions raise that to 120Hz.
The phone measures 12.3 mm (0.48 inches) thick when folded, with its thinnest section measuring 3.5 mm (0.14 inches) when fully open. It weighs approximately 299 g (10.5 ounces), or around 304 g (10.7 ounces) when Huawei includes the screen surface layer. Apparently, even weighing a phone now requires director’s-cut figures.
Inside is Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro processor with 16GB of RAM. Standard versions offer 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage, while the privacy-screen model has 1TB. A privacy-screen bundle with the M-Pen 3 Mini stretches storage to 2TB. HarmonyOS 7 handles multitasking, including running three windows with independent volume controls.
The optional Lingdun display narrows side visibility without reducing resolution. ECG analysis is also included, allowing users to record a 30-second reading by holding both sides of the unfolded phone. Handy after checking the repair cost of a 10.2-inch folding screen.
Photography comes from a 50-megapixel variable-aperture main camera, 40-megapixel ultrawide, and 50-megapixel periscope telephoto. The system offers 3.5× optical zoom, 7× optical-quality zoom, and 100× digital zoom. Two 8-megapixel cameras handle selfies in folded and unfolded modes.
A 5,600mAh battery supports 66W wired and 50W wireless charging, plus wireless reverse charging. Other features include IP58 and IP59 protection, satellite communication, eSIM support, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.
The Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design starts at 19,999 yuan [CH] (approximately US$2,980), while the top-tier 2TB Collector’s Edition with the stylus bundle tops out at 29,999 yuan (roughly US$4,470). Sales begin in China on September 12, while international availability remains unconfirmed.
I know. The price is a shocker, but then again, if it shocks you, then you are probably not its target market.
