This S$149 Camera Wants to Convince You to Carry a Camera Again

LUMOS EVOKE Digital Camera

Dedicated digital cameras have a problem. They are competing against smartphones that most people already carry everywhere. Worse still, many compact cameras cost as much as a decent smartphone. So convincing someone to carry an extra device is no easy task.

LUMOS thinks it may have found the answer: make it affordable.

The Singapore lifestyle tech brand has launched the LUMOS EVOKE, a compact digital camera that costs just S$149. At that price, it may tempt people who miss the experience of using a dedicated camera but are not ready to spend hundreds, or even thousands, on a mirrorless setup.

Despite the budget-friendly price tag, the EVOKE packs a respectable feature list. It captures 64 MP photos, records 4K video at 30 fps, and includes 16 built-in filters with names like Retro Fade, Warm Vintage, and Cinematic Cool. There is also a flip screen for selfies and creative angles, 16x zoom for distant subjects, a built-in flashlight for dim environments, plus autofocus and anti-shake support to help keep shots usable.

LUMOS says the EVOKE is tuned for a softer, more natural image style instead of the heavily processed look often associated with smartphone photography. Whether that is enough to convince smartphone photographers remains to be seen, but it is certainly an interesting pitch.

Other features include USB-C charging, making it easy to top up from a laptop, power bank, or car charger while traveling.

Available now for S$149 (~US$116) with 32 GB of storage or S$199 (~US$155) with 128 GB, the LUMOS EVOKE may not replace your smartphone. But at this price, it might just convince you that carrying a dedicated camera can still be fun.

In case anyone’s wondering… it is not the cheapest point-and-shoot camera. That honor remains with Lenovo with the C55.
