Result Japan Turns the FT86 Into a Trueno With the Wild NEO86 Widebody Kit

NEO86 Wide Body Kit by Result Japan

To some extent, Rocket Bunny’s kawaii R32 GT-R turned heads because of nostalgia, and it was the only custom ride that triggered a flood of nostalgia at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon 2026. There was an AE86—specifically Takumi Fujiwara’s Toyota AE86—but like the Pocket Bunny, this ain’t built on the original car; it’s a set of custom body kit that turns the FT86—or GR86 as it is known in some regions—into a Trueno AE86.

Aptly called NEO86 (new 86), it is a widebody kit that turns modern 86 (ZN6, 2017–2020), Scion FR-S (2013–2016), or BRZ (ZC6, 2013–2020) into a Trueno AE86—complete with today’s car design taboo: pop-up headlights. The NEO86 Wide Body Kit by Result Japan, which is made from fiberglass-reinforced plastic, or FRP, consists of the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, front wide fenders, rear overfenders, door panels, aero hood, trunk spoiler, and, of course, the ultimate design feature of 80s sports cars: a retractable headlight kit.

The kit is not street legal, by the way. You can try getting it approved for the road, but it is unlikely to be granted street-legal status. This is no bolt-on kit. It is for most parts, but it also requires your beloved 86 to go under the knife, as modification and cutting into the car body are essential.

Anyhoo, as far as the show car that appeared at the Tokyo Auto Salon goes, it was paired up with deep-dish Watanabe Type-R wheels, and the bumpers are matte-finished and textured, accurately recreating the plastic bumpers of the original AE86, also popular at the time with automakers. Completing the look is the iconic black-and-white paint job, with the iconic white stripe and a set of branding that isn’t Fujiwara Tofu on the door.

The Japanese branding (レーシングサービスワタナベ) is Racing Service Watanabe, the maker of racing wheels and automotive parts best known for its classic eight-spoke wheels used on vintage Japanese sports cars like the AE86.

Now for the exciting news. The body kit is a product that money can buy. Pre-order started at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026, and it commands 860,000 yen [JP] in Japan. Meanwhile, stateside dwellers are not left out. The kit is available from US-based retailer My Japan Direct for US$7,740, excluding installation or shipping, if required.
