When it comes to music, the color gold is often associated with hip-hop and rap. Now your DJ equipment can dress for the occasion, too, thanks to this eye-catching, super-blinged Technics SL-1200 55th Anniversary Edition.
Created to celebrate the SL-1200 Series, each turntable features an individually engraved anniversary badge with its serial number. There are 12,000 units to go around worldwide. And yes, somehow, businesses keep finding reasons to celebrate—even for that one product line. But hey. Who’s complaining?
The gold treatment extends to the S-shaped tonearm, tonearm base, platter rim, strobe marks, knobs, and buttons. Even the slipmat gets a gold-themed design. Your records may still be black, but everything around them has apparently signed a recording contract.
There are seven colorways: Gold, Blue, Red, Black, Green, White, and Grey. So you can choose how loudly your turntable announces itself before you actually play anything.
Underneath the celebratory outfit is the SL-1200MK7 platform—which, if you haven’t already heard, also had a super cool Supreme Edition in 2023. Its digitally controlled coreless direct-drive motor gets the platter up to 33⅓ rpm in 0.7 seconds, with 45 and 78 rpm playback also supported. The familiar vertical pitch fader offers ±8% or ±16% adjustment, while Reverse Play lets you send the record spinning backward. Fixing a terrible song selection remains your responsibility.
The height-adjustable tonearm accommodates different cartridges, while the vibration-damping cabinet and insulators help keep unwanted movement away from the needle. Detachable power and phono cables make transport and replacement less troublesome. Useful, considering this thing weighs approximately 9.6 kg (21.2 lbs). The bling comes with a workout.
The Technics SL-1200 55th Anniversary Edition is scheduled for release this month (September 2026), with prices starting at US$1,499.99 each. I’m not sure if we’re too late (again) or too early. The website lists all colorways as “SOLD OUT – BACK IN STOCK SOON,” so sales may not have started yet, or, God forbid, they may have already sold out. Oops.
