Microsoft has found a surprisingly sensible way to drag physical games into the digital age without first throwing them into a furnace. Its new disc-to-digital feature lets players claim a digital entitlement for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X games simply by inserting the disc into a compatible console and launching it.
The original disc continues to work as before, but the entitlement can unlock digital conveniences such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported.
In other words, that plastic circle gathering dust on your shelf may now let you play the same game across more devices. Microsoft says most Xbox One and Series X disc-based games will support the feature, with thousands of titles included initially and more coming later.
Testing begins with Xbox Insiders on August 31, 2026, before a wider rollout.
The timing is particularly delicious because Sony plans to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028. While PlayStation is preparing to make game shelves ornamental, Xbox is finding new ways to make old discs useful.
Nobody expected Microsoft to become the defender of physical media, yet here we are. Strange generation, this one. I just hope this is not to soften Xbox users for a disc-less future. Fingers crossed.
