Xiaomi’s Mijia Dining Hanging Lamp Wants to Save Your Eyes During Dinner and Study Sessions

Xiaomi Mijia Dining Hanging Lamp

The lamp designed for the home dining area is usually not ideal for studying, and yet, many families in Asia use the same table for everything from arts and crafts to studying to just chilling out when they are not couch-potato-ing. Xiaomi understands this and has launched a dining hanging lamp simply called the Mijia Dining Hanging Lamp. It is billed as a dining/study combo lamp, and that works with the Mijia app, supports Super XiaoAi control, as well as Xiaomi Hyper Smart Connect.

Where most dining lights of such design, i.e., a long rectangular bar, leave the space above them dark, the Mijia Dining Hanging Lamp does not, thanks to its dual-illumination design. It uses an up/down lighting structure with the upward lighting softening the transition between ambient light and the downward lighting layer for a more natural effect. The downward lighting adopts a dual anti-glare structure using a diffusion plate and prism plate, making the light softer and less harsh on the eyes. Plus, it has a deep anti-glare structure design with a 12 mm recessed light source that further reduces direct glare.

Xiaomi said the lamp can offer 300 lux of uniform brightness across the table. All told, the lamp offers a total luminous flux of 2,700 lumens, with an upward/downward light flux ratio of about 1:2 (34 percent upward light output ratio; 66 percent downward light output ratio), and an anti-glare rating of ≤19.

The lamp promises to let you bathe in sunlight-like illumination for a more natural experience, whether you are having a meal or reading. It uses custom full-spectrum LEDs to simulate a natural sunlight spectrum for realistic lighting, while the Ra97 high color rendering index accurately reproduces vibrant food colors for a more appetizing dining experience. And yes, that is apparently a thing. Hmmm, so do some restaurants also adopt this approach to make their food look more delectable? I wonder.

In addition, exempt-level photobiological safety and flicker-free lighting provide comfortable and reassuring illumination. Basically, Xiaomi has taken light design far too seriously as far as effective illumination and eye care go. The lamp was developed with Xiaomi Qingshan Eye Protection solution to provide a professional lighting environment with high color rendering, low blue light, and no visible flicker.

Where most lighting designs have little concern for actual illumination, let alone the eyes of users, the Mijia Dining Hanging Lamp may feel like a bit of an overkill, and yet, it could be the best thing for our eyes, and to some extent, our appetite.

In the aesthetic department, the lamp is as minimalistic as it can get. It features ABS and aluminum construction with a sandblasted anodized finish. The lamp itself measures 1,100 mm (43.3 inches) long and 40 mm (1.57 inches) wide, while the hanging lines allow for between 450 and 1,250 mm (17.7 to 49.2 inches) of distance from the ceiling-mounted box, which itself measures 488 by 63 mm (19.2 by 2.5 inches).

The lamp connects via Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b/g/n, 2.4 GHz) and Bluetooth 4.2. Yes, it has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, too.

The Mijia Dining Hanging Lamp is available in China in a choice of black or white finish, with an MSRP of 799 yuan [CH] (about US$116).
