Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 Takes Thin And Light To The Next Level But Still Not The Thinnest Folding Phone

Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 Folding Smartphone

Xiaomi has outdone itself again. China’s most prominent electronic giant/smartphone maker/EV car maker has just revealed its next-gen folding phone, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 which is even lighter and thinner than its predecessor. In its open state, the thinnest part is a mere 4.59 mm. When closed, it is just 9.47 mm, and it tips the scales at 226-228g, depending on the back cover material.

To put things in perspective, the Mix Fold 3 was 5.26 mm when opened and 10.86-10.96 mm when closed, and it weighs 259-255g. However, again, the honor of the industry’s thinnest remains Honor to keep with the Magic V3’s crazy 4.35 mm and 9.2 mm profiles. However, the weight is comparable with the V3 weighing a tad heavier at 229g.

One of the key techs that enable this extremely thin profile and lightweight on the new Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 [CH] is the new Xiaomi “dragon skeletal” shaft in its proprietary hinge design. When folded, the hinge affords the device a minuscule R1.6 water-drop gap, all while remaining super tough and durable.

The lightweight is also made possible with a full carbon structure featuring a 100% carbon fiber Xiaomi keel hinge floating plate, 100% carbon fiber screen support lining, and 100% carbon fiber middle frame battery compartment lining.

Another key selling point of the new Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 is, of course, imaging co-engineered with Leica. The Leica optical full-focus quad-camera setup comprises a 50 MP main snapper with OIS, a 50 MP Leica floating telephoto camera with 9 cm – ∞ focusing distance, a 10 MP “close-up” telephoto camera with OIS, and a 12 MP 120° ultra-wide angle lens camera.

As before, the rear camera supports up to 8K 24 fps video recording, as well as 4K 24/30/60 fps, and the usual 1080p and 720p. The rear also supports 1080p slow-mo at 120/240/960 fps with 720p resolution, affording up to a mind-blowing 1,920 fps (!?).

Meanwhile, both the internal and external front-facing camera is 16 MP which supports 1080p and 720p videoing with a bunch of imaging gimmicks. The quad camera is less of an eyesore now, TBH. Where the previous generation device has camera protrusions on top of the camera bump, the Mix Fold 4 has flushed cameras on a slightly thicker camera bump.

Like its predecessor, this camera module stretches across almost the entire width of the top of the device. It is way sleeker and more cohesive, IMHO.

In the display department, it has got a 120 Hz 6.56-inch FHD+ (2,520 x 1,080) AMOLED display on the outside with 3,000 nits peak brightness, 8,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and supports HDR10+, HDR Vivid, and Dolby Vision. It is protected by Xiaomi Dragon Crystal glass.

The device opens to a glorious. 7.98-inch 2K+ (2,488 x 2,224) AMOLED (Pol-less Plus) display with up to 120 Hz refresh rate. Like the external display, it has an 8,000,000:1 contrast ratio and supports HDR10+, HDR Vivid, and Dolby Vision.

The new Xiaomi is powered by a 4 nm process Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform featuring an octacore processor with a max clock speed of 3.3 GHz, Adreno GPU, and Qualcomm AI engine. It is offered in 12 GB / 16 GB LPDDR5X high-speed RAM (8533 Mbps), and 256 GB / 512 GB / 1 TB UFS 4.0 high-speed storage.

Other noteworthy details include a 5,100 mAh battery with Hyper 67 W wired fast charging and Hyper 50 W wireless fast charging, bi-directional satellite communications, IPX8 rated construction, 5G dual-SIM (nano, of course), support Wi-Fi 7 and lower, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.4, dual-Bluetooth, positioning (Beidou B11+B1C + B2a, GPS L1 + L5, Galileo E1 + E5a, GLONASS G1, QZSS L1 + L5, NavIC L5, AGNSS, and more), and USB 3.2 with USB Type C interface.

The new folding device from Xiaomi is powered by Xiaomi HyperOS AI “efficiency master”. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 was launched yesterday in China with a starting price of 8,999 yuan [CH] which works out to be approximately 1,238 USD today.
