Some plainclothes armed security personnel carry a briefcase that hides a submachine gun. But the new Zev Technologies FDP hides in plain sight. The FDP, or Folding Defensive Platform, has to be one of the coolest firearms we have seen this year. It is kind of the Pistollo 77° that folds. Obviously, the two are not the same.
Developed with Magpul, the Folding Defensive Platform is a 9 mm firearm that has taken origami far too seriously. When folded, it becomes a compact rectangular package suitable for storage and transport. Unfolded, it reveals a pistol-caliber defensive platform available in two forms: the FDP-Pistol and FDP-Carbine.
The distinction is more than naming. The FDP-P is legally a pistol, while the stock-equipped FDP-C is considered a short-barreled rifle in the United States and is subject to the applicable federal requirements. Zev also plans to offer SBR conversion kits for pistol owners who complete the necessary paperwork before giving theirs a stock.
Both versions feature adjustable iron sights integrated into the carry handle, which can be removed to reveal a 1913 Picatinny rail for compatible accessories. The FDP further boasts an ambidextrous charging system, a reversible magazine release, and lightweight, corrosion-resistant materials that keep it portable and durable.
Each FDP includes two Magpul PMAG 21 GL9 magazines and custom-cut foam designed for a Pelican 1450 case. The case itself is not listed among the included items, so do not throw away your actual briefcase just yet.
The Zev Technologies FDP costs US$1,699, with purchases limited to one per order and availability subject to local laws.
