The BETA Technologies ALIA MV250 looks like an aircraft designed after somebody deleted the rule requiring airplanes to look ordinary. It has a conventional wing, a rear-facing cruise propeller, and four electric lift rotors mounted on long outriggers. The result is part airplane, part helicopter, and entirely something you would expect to see delivering supplies to a lunar outpost.

Unveiled at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow, the MV250 is an autonomous hybrid-electric vertical-take-off-and-landing aircraft built primarily for military logistics. It can operate without a runway or an onboard pilot, which makes it useful for delivering cargo into places where sending a crew would be a spectacularly poor idea.

The MV250 is based on BETA’s flight-proven ALIA VTOL platform, but swaps the civilian model’s purely electric setup for a series-hybrid system. A 1.3 MW turbogenerator supplies electricity to an 800 V bus rather than mechanically driving the propellers. During vertical flight, when power demand can exceed 1.2 MW, modular batteries join the effort.

BETA claims a cruising speed above 170 knots (315 km/h; 196 mph) and an operational radius exceeding 250 nautical miles (463 km; 288 miles) while carrying 2,000 lb (907 kg). Reduce the payload to 1,000 lb (454 kg), and the range stretches beyond 750 nautical miles (1,389 km; 863 miles). Its ferry range is projected at more than 1,300 nautical miles (2,408 km; 1,496 miles), while the cargo hold offers 250 ft³ (7.1 m³) of space.

It can also remain airborne for up to 12 hours at 20,000 feet (6,096 m) on surveillance missions. The turbogenerator runs on common military fuels and can supply power to equipment after landing.

Sikorsky is integrating its MATRIX autonomy system into the MV250, with testing already underway on BETA’s related CX300 aircraft. The future of military cargo delivery may resemble a giant robotic dragonfly—and we are completely fine with that.
