Amazfit Sent Its T-Rex 2 Into Stratosphere To Prove Its Strength In Extreme Environments

Amazfit T-Rex 2 Rugged Smartwatch

If you are an adventurer who often finds yourself in extreme conditions, such as high altitude and extreme cold, and you also depend on GPS to navigate, well then Amazfit wants to let you know its T-Rex rugged smartwatch is totally up to the task.

And the descent begins…

Like the T-Rex Pro from last year, this latest T-Rex has passed 15 military-grade tests, including resistance to high and low pressure, extreme 70 degrees Celsius (158 Fahrenheit) heat and minus 40 degrees Celsius cold, plus intense vibrations and shock.

To prove that the new Amazfit T-Rex 2 can live up to the extreme in the real world, Amazfit recently sent one into space and back. OK. It did not reach the Kármán line, the altitude where space begins. However, the rugged smartwatch did make it into the stratosphere.

A weather balloon sent the watch, along with a “spacecraft” equipped with fully-functional tracking and control systems, as well as an onboard camera, on a two and a half hour round-trip to the stratosphere.

The smartwatch peaked at an altitude of about 113,000 feet (34.5 kilometers or 21.4 miles) before making its way back to Earth. Along the way, it reached a top speed of over 180 mph (about 290 km/h).

On this adventure, the watch endured and survived intense air pressure of less than 0.2 percent of what we experience at sea level, and freezing temperatures of minus 64 degrees Celsius (-83.2 Fahrenheit).

During this trip to (almost) space, the watch’s GPS capability was also put to the test. The T-Rex 2’s dual-band positioning and support for five satellite systems were both enabled to track its journey.

Once back on Earth, the journey recorded by the watch was reviewed by the “Sent Into Space” team and confirmed that it was in order.
