Remember when an ultrabook was supposed to be thin, light, and decidedly not a gaming machine? GIGABYTE would like to challenge that idea with the new AORUS GeForce RTX 50 Series AI BOX. It wants to bestow ultrabooks that sacrifice graphics for portability with the graphics power and AI power they never had.
At first glance, it looks like another external GPU enclosure. In reality, it is GIGABYTE‘s attempt to turn a humble laptop into a desktop-class gaming and AI workstation without forcing you to carry a gaming laptop the size of a paving stone.
Leading the charge is the AORUS GeForce RTX 5090 AI BOX. Armed with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 and 32 GB of VRAM, the compact box delivers over 3,000 AI TOPS of FP4 performance. That is enough muscle for local large language models, generative AI workloads, image generation, content creation, and gaming that would make most ultrabooks cry for help.
For those who do not require quite so much computational violence, there is also the RTX 5060 Ti AI BOX. With 16 GB of VRAM, it is aimed at 1080p and 2K gaming, AI-assisted creative work, image generation, and 3D rendering.
The magic happens through Thunderbolt 5, allowing compatible laptops to tap into desktop-class graphics power without needing a full desktop setup. Plug it in at home, disconnect it when you leave, and your lightweight laptop can live a double life.
Naturally, heat is the biggest enemy of stuffing desktop-class graphics hardware into a compact enclosure. To stop things from turning into an expensive space heater, GIGABYTE has equipped both models with advanced cooling systems.
The RTX 5090 AI BOX features the company’s WATERFORCE all-in-one liquid cooling setup, complete with a 240 mm radiator and dual 120 mm fans. The RTX 5060 Ti AI BOX takes a more traditional approach with the WINDFORCE cooling system, combining the Hawk Fan design and server-grade thermal conductive gel to keep temperatures under control and noise levels low.
The AI angle is arguably the more interesting part. While everyone is talking about cloud AI, GIGABYTE is betting that many users would rather run AI workloads locally. No subscriptions. No waiting for remote servers. Just your laptop and a ridiculously overpowered box sitting next to it.
Meanwhile, if the idea of giving your ultrabook desktop-grade superpowers sounds appealing, you can learn more about the AORUS GeForce RTX 5090 AI BOX and the AORUS GeForce RTX 5060 Ti AI BOX on GIGABYTE’s website.
