Driveable Life-size LEGO Technic McLaren P1 Supercar Has So Many Firsts For LEGO

Driveable Life-size LEGO Technic McLaren P1 Supercar

LEGO did it again. The Danish toy maker has created yet another driveable LEGO car model. But what sets the driveable life-size LEGO Technic McLaren P1 supercar from driveable models like the life-size Bugatti and the life-size Toyota Supra is that it is the first life-size LEGO scale build capable of steering, allowing it to be driven around corners and complete a lap of a race track.

Mind you, we are not talking about a LEGO model affixed to the front of the car to complete the track; it literally ran the course. Formula One McLaren driver Lando Norris who made the historic firsts for LEGO on Silverstone Circuit also made another first: being the first time a Formula One racing driver has driven a LEGO scale build.

This 1:1 build of the modern legendary ride from the British sports car maker comprises over 342,817 LEGO Technic pieces. There are 393 different types of LEGO Technic elements, including 11 that were molded specially for this model. The result is a replica of the real-life model weighing 1,220 kilograms (2,690 pounds).

23 specialists from design, engineering, and building from the LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive spent a total of 8,344 hours on the development and construction of the model. The development time alone took a whopping 6,134 hours and another 2,210 hours were devoted to building it.

The build is not just Technic-deep; it packs an electric motor too. This electric motor is made up of LEGO Technic Function batteries and an electric car battery that affords it to travel further than any driveable LEGO model that came before it. The LEGO Technic engine comprises 8 motor packs, each consisting of 96 LEGO Power function motors.

This means this life-size McLaren P1 is rocking a cool 768 LEGO motors. The 8 motor packs allow it to replicate the V8 motor found on the original McLaren P1. The driveable life-size LEGO Technic McLaren P1 is created to celebrate the first ever LEGO-McLaren collaborative set, the LEGO Technic McLaren P1 set. Keep going to see this amazing 1:1 scale build in action.
