It is rumored that Apple’s first folding phone will adopt a wide form factor. Well, while Apple is still making it happen, Huawei beats the American tech giant to it for a super-wide-form-factor folding phone. Folks, meet the Huawei Pura X Max. As the product name suggests, this device is a larger version of the Pura X—the famously large square, folding phone from last year.
Except this time, Huawei did not just make it bigger. It made it wider in a way that almost feels like someone quietly folded a small tablet in half and called it a phone. At least, that was my first thought when I first saw the product images.
Open it up, and you are greeted by a 7.7-inch wide-format internal display with a laptop-like aspect ratio that finally makes sense for videos, multitasking, and actual typing without feeling like you are working on a stretched bookmark. Close it, and the 5.4-inch outer screen remains wide enough to be useful instead of merely decorative. Both panels support 1–120 Hz LTPO refresh rate and reach up to 3000–3500 nits brightness, so visibility is not exactly a problem.
Inside, Huawei equips the Pura X Max [CH] with its Kirin 9030 Pro processor, paired with up to 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage, which is about as subtle as bringing a workstation to a café. HarmonyOS 6.1 runs the show here, naturally.
Camera hardware is equally serious. The triple-camera system includes a 50 MP main camera with variable aperture, a 50 MP telephoto, and a 12.5 MP ultra-wide, giving the Pura X Max proper flagship credentials instead of “foldable compromise” optics.
Battery life also gets attention, thanks to a 5,300 mAh battery with 66 W wired and 50 W wireless charging, which sounds reassuring considering the amount of screen you are carrying around in your pocket.
And yes, there is stylus support too. Because when your foldable opens into something this wide, Huawei clearly expects you to sketch, annotate, or pretend you are working while actually watching videos in landscape mode.
The result is a foldable that behaves very differently from the tall, narrow designs we are used to seeing. The wide layout makes multitasking easier, videos feel more natural in landscape, and typing does not feel like squeezing thoughts through a letter slot. And perhaps more importantly, it arrives before Apple and Samsung get their wide-format answers ready, which makes the Pura X Max feel like a preview of where foldables are heading next.
The Huawei Pura X Max has been launched in China with a starting price of 10,699 yuan [CH], which works out to be around US$1,569, based on the current going rate.
