There’s a point where collecting art requires more walls. George Lucas went with a museum. For the rest of us, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art (TASCHEN, ISBN: 9783754405642) offers a somewhat more manageable arrangement: two hardcover volumes and a slipcase.
Created with Lucas and the museum, the 832-page set explores storytelling through paintings, illustrations, photography, comics, and filmmaking. Norman Rockwell and Frank Frazetta are among the artists represented. So, yes, there’s plenty here beyond a galaxy far, far away.
But nobody is asking you to leave your Star Wars obsession at the door. A dedicated cinema section features original production art, concept paintings, costumes, and vehicles, tracing how those imagined worlds took shape. Texts by George Lucas and Guillermo del Toro accompany the visual feast, with Jessica Hundley editing the collection.
The English-language set measures 24.3 × 30.4 cm (9.6 × 12 inches) and weighs 6.13 kg (13.5 pounds). Make room on the coffee table. Possibly relocate the coffee.
Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is available for US$200. Owning a museum remains outside the budget for regular folks, so this bookshelf version is a practical proposition, IMHO.
