If you dig the idea of a retro-futuristic look for automobiles, then you may want to check out Wiesmann’s Project Thunderball. OK. Maybe it is not futuristic per se but it is electric drive means it is futuristic (no?) and this yet-to-be-named so-called “world’s first all-electric convertible roadster” definitely has a retro vibe in it. For the uninitiated, Wiesmann is a German automaker best known for its hand-built custom convertibles and coupes.
Wiesmann’s Project Thunderball is powered by an “advanced bespoke electric powertrain”, twin Axial flux electric rear-mid mounted PMSM e-motors, that puts out 680 HP and a pretty breath-taking 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft) of torque to enable a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in mere 2.9 seconds. And it is lightweight too, tipping the scales at just 1,700 kilograms (3,747 lbs).
This upcoming electric drive sports car, which boasts an 800V high-voltage architecture, will be outfitted with a 92 kWh bespoke battery pack that offers up to 500 km (310 miles) range. The battery system will be able to support ultra-rapid 300 kW DC fast charging at public chargers say Wiesmann GmbH. Back at home, it recharges via the 22 kW onboard charger.
The car further features a highly-engineered five-level Intelligent Regenerative Braking System that is said to create “a driver-orientated emotional experience” for which Wiesmann vehicles are known for. Steering wheel-mounted paddles allow instant adjustment of the car’s regenerative braking power, much like shifting gears.
When Project Thunderball will go into production is unclear. However, we heard that it will start at €300,000 (about US$312,327 today).
