Dyson Put a Camera in a Toothbrush to Find and Floss the Gaps

First, there was the electric toothbrush that only spins its circular head; then came the micro-vibrating electric toothbrush, followed by one that marries a traditional electric toothbrush with water-jet flossing. You’d think that’s the peak of electric toothbrush tech. Well, no. Dyson took the last idea to the next level by throwing a camera into the mix. That’s right. A camera has officially made itself part of a toothbrush. Damn. What a time to be alive!

Called CameraJet, it is the first toothbrush to be equipped with a camera that isn’t only there to satisfy your need to inspect your teeth up close. Dental care products with a camera aren’t new. But clearly, Dyson being Dyson, it is not about to be ordinary.

Where existing niche camera-equipped toothbrushes serve purely for manual visual checking or recording, CameraJet marries the camera with an AI vision system to actively identify interdental gaps and automatically jet water into them within 100 ms as you move across your teeth. That’s right. There’s no need to stop for it to do its job. It will proceed where necessary, thereby achieving brushing and flossing simultaneously, without you having to do the latter.

It took Dyson 6 years, 470,000 dental images, and no less than 16 million lines of code to arrive at this toothbrush from the future that can find gaps between teeth in a blinding 0.1 second. It is worth noting that CameraJet also lets you admire your enamel like those niche products, via a companion app. It connects to a smartphone via Wi-Fi to allow a live view.

Just beneath the bristle head is a 0.1 MP macro camera. AI analyzes 28 frames of real-time imagery per second, identifies interdental gaps in 0.1 seconds, and swiftly and precisely introduces a cone-shaped jet of up to 0.15 ml of water to floss the gap, gently removing plaque. The toothbrush has a built-in 12.5 ml water reservoir, an anti-gravity tank that promises to minimize air pockets for effective flossing at any angle.

Meanwhile, the dual-bristle brush head moves nearly 1,000 times per second to effectively brush your teeth. The brush head is silicone-backed, serving as a sonic dampener for a softer feel and greater comfort so that, presumably, you will not feel like you are putting a piece of construction equipment with a crazy amount of vibration in your mouth.

And it ought to be, because this little guy is packed with a powerful sonic motor that oscillates 245 times a second. It is paired with variable sonic oscillation that keeps the bristles in constant motion to remove more plaque. Users can choose to brush and floss at the same time, or brush and floss separately. In addition, it has three brushing strengths to choose from, namely gentle, variable, and deep clean.

This innovative oral care product further boasts RFID tech that monitors brush head use and lets you know when to replace it. The device comes with a 3-in-1 dock with a travel case to store, charge, and refill the toothbrush at the touch of a button. It uses a USB-C-to-pogo-pin cable for charging, btw.

Oh, the gap-finding tech has a snazzy name: Gap Optical Targeting. The toothbrush is outfitted with a swappable lithium-ion battery that can be replaced when it wears out. Along with the toothbrush, Dyson also debuted its very own non-foaming toothpaste and low-foaming mouth rinse.

The Dyson CameraJet Electric Toothbrush is available now in a choice of Ceramic Pink or Ceramic Ultra Blue for a too-grand-for-an-electric-toothbrush price of £419.99. It is also available for pre-order across the pond, in the US of A, for US$499.99.
