Released in 2002, Treasure Planet is Walt Disney Animation Studios’ ambitious sci-fi reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure novel Treasure Island. In the film, there are space-going ships with sails—solar sails, to be precise—which feel completely surreal. It is truly an underrated animated feature film that deserves more recognition. And it may have a shot at recognition if LEGO Ideas member DRChurch has their way.
DRChurch’s LEGO Ideas submission, entitled Treasure Planet – The RLS Legacy, is a homage to the solar galleon seen in the animated feature film. It has the old-world look of a sailing ship, except that it sails through space, where dropping anchor would be somewhat pointless.
Recreating those sleek, curvy lines with LEGO bricks was no weekend project. DRChurch spent nine months designing and building the model digitally and physically. The result faithfully carries over the movie’s 70/30 design philosophy: 70 percent traditional and 30 percent science fiction. Basically, it looks familiar until you notice the giant solar sails and remember there is no ocean.
The proposed set also includes preliminary minifigure designs for Jim Hawkins, Long John Silver, Dr. Delbert Doppler, and Captain Amelia. Morph is missing for now, which feels like an offence against adorable pink blobs everywhere.
More importantly, Treasure Planet – The RLS Legacy has reached 10,000 supporters and qualified for the Second 2026 LEGO Ideas Review. That does not make it an official LEGO set yet, but it is now hopeful. After more than two decades, perhaps the RLS Legacy is finally sailing toward the recognition it deserves.
