McLaren not only wants to dominate the grid, but it also wants to dominate your toy display, too. The former needs no explanation if you have been following F1 2025, as for the latter… it has partnered with LEGO to launch yet another F1 car building set. This time, it ain’t for kids. Behold, the LEGO Technic McLaren MCL39 F1 Car.
In case anyone is living under a rock, this is the second Technic McLaren set. The first set, launched in 2022, made history as the first-ever LEGO Technic Formula 1 model. Anyhoo, as the product name suggests, the LEGO Technic McLaren MCL39 F1 Car is based on McLaren’s 2025 season Formula 1 race car. It had a good run, securing the Constructors’ Championship for the marque and delivering Lando Norris his maiden Drivers’ Championship title.
It is a 1:8 scale model that uses 1,675 pieces to recreate the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Race Car. Highlights include a removable engine cover that reveals a detailed V6 engine, along with functional steering, suspension, gearbox, and a working differential. The LEGO Technic McLaren MCL39 F1 Car also rocks a working Drag Reduction System (DRS) on the rear spoiler.
However, unlike the CaDA 1:8 Alpine A525 Formula 1 Race Car we saw recently, it does not activate using a separate lever. Instead, the DRS activates when you remove the engine cover and shift into high gear.
The model is presented in its racing colors and liveries, including sponsor decals, making it as realistic as possible. Though it is not clear whether you will be “rewarded” with even more decals to apply, or if there are printed elements to reduce this dreadful part of the build.
When completed, the model measures a shelf-space-devouring 61 cm (24 inches) long, 25 cm (9.5 inches) wide, and 13 cm (5 inches) tall.
The LEGO Technic McLaren MCL39 F1 Car (42228) is set to drop on March 1, 2026, for US$229.99. Pre-orders are now open on LEGO.com, if anyone’s interested.
