Turning video games—even if it’s a vehicle-Centric game like Gran Turismo—into movies is nothing shocking. But turning a toy like View-Master into a movie is stretching it a little. That’s not the end of it. Oh no, it isn’t. If you haven’t already heard, there’s a Matchbox movie, too. Yes, Matchbox, the die-cast model brand.
We missed the news when it was first officially announced on July 19, 2022. Prep for Matchbox: The Movie began in 2024, and the cameras started rolling in 2025. Fast forward to July 26, and we now have the official trailer.
So, what’s the movie about? Well, the movie is, as the title suggests, based on the iconic die-cast toy line. Wait, what? You must be thinking, “How?” I had no idea before July 26, but now I do. It’s a regular action-comedy featuring a lot of vehicles and, for some reason, travelling. Shocker.
The plot centers on an elite CIA operative (John Cena) who drugs his unsuspecting childhood friends at a bar, only for them to wake up mid-flight aboard a cargo jet after being dragged into a globe-trotting mission to recover a missing nuclear warhead. It’s an action-comedy packed with high-speed car chases, mercenary fights, and plenty of vehicle-fueled chaos.
Directed by Sam Hargrave (Extraction), the globe-trotting action-comedy co-stars Jessica Biel and Sam Richardson. Matchbox: The Movie premieres globally on Apple TV+ on October 9, 2026. Meanwhile, here’s the trailer:
