The iMac G3 has a special place in my memories. It was the first time I was introduced to the world of Macintosh. That said, when I heard not only that someone had recreated Apple’s legendary 1998 iMac G3 in all its brick-built glory, but also managed to secure 10,000 supporters on LEGO Ideas, I knew I had to share this with you.
Created by LEGO Ideas member terauma, this striking set uses over 700 LEGO elements to realize the iconic bulging CRT-based all-in-one, and it uses a clear shell that allows the internal details of the AIO to be seen—just like the real deal. OK, maybe not quite. In reality, you don’t see a lot of details on the actual computer. But the idea is there. Since this is a homage to the legendary iMac, I guess the designer had the liberty to go more geeky with it.
The bulge—a signature design of a CRT monitor—is not perfect, but it is as close as it gets without using special molded parts. It even has the integrated handle just like the OG. Completing the look is a “screen” that “displays” the MacOS logo when booting up, and accessories like the iconic round USB mouse and a keyboard.
For those not in the know, the USB mouse was future-forward at that time, when most computers were using PS/2 or even the super ancient Serial (RS-232) interface.
Congrats to terauma’s iMac G3 for getting to the 10K Club and advancing to the official LEGO Ideas review round. Now, fans who want this as an official LEGO Ideas set have to keep their fingers crossed.
