Razer’s Mako Speakers Let You Skip the Soundbar

Razer Mako Desktop Gaming Speakers

Not everyone wants a long bar occupying the space beneath their monitor. Some of us still like speakers to look like speakers, preferably with the freedom to put one on either side of the screen. Razer’s new Mako lineup offers exactly that, with two configurations depending on your appetite for bass—and additional hardware.

The Mako is the 2.1-channel option. Two speakers with custom-tuned 2.75-inch full-range drivers accompany a forward-firing 3.5-inch subwoofer. Output is rated at 40 W RMS and 60 W peak, with frequency response extending down to 45 Hz.

For those who would rather keep the subwoofer out of the equation, the Mako X provides a 2.0-channel setup. Its 2.75-inch drivers work with built-in passive radiators, delivering up to 30 W RMS, 45 W peak, and low-end response down to 60 Hz.

Both angle the speakers toward the listener and offer 7.1 virtual surround sound. That’s virtual, mind you; you won’t be finding seven speakers in the box.

Naturally, Razer has found somewhere to put the lighting. Mako projects Chroma RGB onto the wall behind your desk, while Mako X gets ten-zone underglow.

USB-C handles power and audio, with Bluetooth 5.3 and 3.5 mm connections as alternatives. Higher output requires a compatible USB-C power source rated at 30 W or more.

So, yes, you can upgrade your desktop sound without buying a soundbar—like the good’ol days. Finding space for everything else on the desk remains your problem. Then again, given its small footprint, it’d be a sleeker option, especially if you have desktop space that is a premium.

The Razer Mako X is available as we speak for US$99.99 from Razer.com and Best Buy. Meanwhile,  the Mako will retail for US$149.99 when it becomes available.
