Takara Tomy’s Missing Link line is all about resurrecting G1 toys with modern articulation and engineering, but Grimlock is now getting VIP treatment. After C-12 delivered the toy-accurate version, Takara Tomy is doubling down with C-13, an anime-accurate take on the Dinobot leader. That makes Grimlock only the second character in the line to receive both toy and cartoon versions, following C-01/C-02 Convoy (Optimus Prime). Yes, my friends, Grimlock is officially getting the toon treatment.
The Takara Tomy Missing Link C-13 Grimlock (Anime Ver.) [JP] has the eccentric leader of the Dinobots in colors as seen in the cartoon series. With the cartoon version, Grimlock ditches the chrome parts for flat colors. Gone are the transparent elements, too, and the sticker elements that made it look like a walking mainframe computer. If I can be honest, I am more into the toon-accurate version because I never had the Grimlock toy, or any Transformers toys in the 80s. My memories have always been those of the cartoon.
Originally introduced in 1985 as the commanding officer of the Dinobots, Grimlock returns in the Missing Link C-13 as a completely newly engineered figure faithful to his anime appearance. He transforms from a mechanical Tyrannosaurus into robot mode while retaining select die-cast parts, just like the vintage release. This time, both modes benefit from improved articulation, allowing dynamic poses in either dinosaur or robot form.
Compared to C-12, the C-13 features a repositioned Autobot emblem and a reshaped chest section for cartoon accuracy. Accessories include a red “Saber” inspired by the original toy and overseas comic version, a two-tone anime-accurate Double Laser Gun, and a Missile Launcher with removable missiles for display play.
A small human worker figure, similar to the one included with C-05 Sunstreaker, can ride inside the cockpit hatch on Grimlock’s back. A heat-activated Secret Emblem reveals the faction mark when warmed by touch, and a stand-compatible joint is built into the back for action posing. The retro-inspired packaging and included collection card complete the nostalgia hit.
Takara Tomy Missing Link C-13 Grimlock (Anime Ver.) is scheduled for release in late July 2026. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is 18,700 yen [JP] (approx. US$125).
