A lot of times, the phones from China that we featured here were mostly for China market. Not for the latest ZTE flagship, though. It now has a proper international website where you can pick up the recently announced ZTE Axon 40 Ultra smartphone.
Continuing from the ZTE Axon 30, the new Axon also rocks an under-display front-facing camera – the 3rd generation’s under-display camera – to achieve a true edge-to-edge full-screen display.
The overall aesthetic is sleek, though nothing groundbreaking. It has the Samsung Galaxy 22 Ultra vibe to it, IMHO, and that’s not a bad thing if you are fine with the conventional.
Anywho, ZTE has opted to go with a curved edge back paired with a rather dated waterfall curved glass display.
Speaking of the display, it is a large 120 Hz 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a 16 MP front-facing hidden up top and under the screen.
The displays offer FHD+ resolution (2,480 by 1,116 pixels), 10-bit color depth, 360 Hz touch sampling depth, and 100% DCI-P3 wide color gamut, bolstered by ZTE’s advanced UDC display chip that has a “one-pixel circuit drives one-pixel unit.” This allows each pixel to be independently controlled, thereby eliminating the jagged edge effect for a clearer more detailed display.
All told, 400 ppi is packed in display in a blue diamond pixel arrangement. Rounding up the display is Low Blue Light Certification from TÜV Rheinland.
The new Axon 40 Ultra is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. In the imaging department, it has a 64 MP triple camera system comprising a 64 MP wide-angle primary camera with 16 mm equivalent focal length and 4 cm AF micro, a 64 MP UHD “Humanity” primary camera with 35 mm equivalent focal length and OIS, and a 64 MP periscope telephoto primary camera.
I believe, for the first time, ZTE is marketing computational photography on its device to enhance image quality.
Other features include an under-display fingerprint sensor, GPS/A-GPS/Beidou/Galileo/GLONASS, WiFi 6 Enhanced version, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, a 9-layer heat dissipation system, X-axis linear motor, 5,000 mAh battery, 65W quick charge, and a dual speaker setup that supports Dual-smartPA, and DTS:X Ultra.
If anyone’s interested, ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is available to buy now in a choice of 8+128 or 12+256 configurations, for US$799 and up. There is also a mid-range ZTE Axon 40 Pro model, powered by SD 870 5G, going for US$499 and up, for those who prefer to spend less.
