While both Xiaomi and Oppo are developing under-display camera, it was ZTE Corporation that beats its fellow Chinese companies to it with the Axon 20 5G last year and it would remain the only device to rock this wonderful new technology.
Fast forward to 2021, ZTE has officially taken the wrap off the ZTE Axon 30, now rocking the 2nd-Gen under-display camera. Along with the new and improved under-display camera is many world’s first, including the world’s first under-display camera that packs 400 ppi and believe it or not, 120 Hz refresh rate.
It is also the first display to secure three international certifications for eye-protection. The under-display camera improvements are attributed mainly new developments, including an all-new independent UDC Pro display chip, multi-drive Array Circuit Enhanced circuit, and 7-layer high transparency display material.
With the camera out of the way, you get to enjoy the entire 6.92” FHD+ (2,460 x 1,080 pixels) AMOLED display, presented in a cinematic 20.5:9 aspect ratio. In case anyone’s interested, the display is a 10-bit display that supports a billion colors, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, and has a 360 Hz touch sampling rate.
Imaging is by the way of a quad-camera setup, composed of a 64 MP Sony IMX682, an 8 MP 120-degree super wide-angle camera, a macro camera and a depth of field camera.
Under the hood, it is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 870, paired to UFS 3.1 storage. Interestingly, it has new internal storage technology that would add 8 GB to the regular RAM to increase performance during demanding activities such as gaming.
And then there’s the so-called super antennae 3.1 that ensures holding of phone, whether in landscape or portrait will not affect transmission and thereby assuring stable connectivity (though it won’t help if your telco or your fiber service sucks. Just saying…).
Finally, the device benefits from a 4,200 mAh battery with 55 W quick charge support.
ZTE Axon 30 5G Smartphone is offered in 6 and 8 GB RAM and 128 and 256 GB. It will go on sale in China starting August 03, 2021, with a starting price of 2,198 yuan (or about US$338).
