At this point, AI is limited to living in our hardware. It’s not going anywhere soon, but in the upcoming sci-fi flick Tron: Ares, it explores: what if AI comes alive and walks amongst us?
Warning: this article may contain spoilers. So proceed with caution!
That’s right, sci-fi fanatics, Tron returns to the big screen after a decade and a half. This time, the sci-fi has leveled up with a core tech that’s relatable to all of us today: AI. Unlike in the past two films, where people somehow got themselves into the digital world, in Tron: Ares, the digital world spills into reality.
Ares, played by Jared Leto, is a super sophisticated program that has been brought into the real world to retrieve a critical piece of code from a tech rebel, a former employee of tech giant Encom. The film explores how Ares, while in the real world, begins to question his directives after developing a fascination with humanity. You know how this goes: Ares starts to defy the orders given to him.
Expect more light shows played out in our world by lightcycle, lightboat, and digital drones.
The film also marks the return of American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, who are responsible for the movie’s soundtrack. The official trailer dropped on July 18, and on the same day, the band released “As Alive As You Need Me To Be,” the soundtrack album’s first single—and their first official music in five years. Tron: Ares (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring all original music by Nine Inch Nails, will be released on September 19 via Interscope Records.
Tron: Ares is directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) and stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, with Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges. Leto also serves as producer alongside Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger.
Tron: Ares hits theaters on October 10. In the meantime, enjoy the official trailer. Oh, can I say the expressionless Leto is perfect for the role as an AI entity? Just saying…
