World’s Largest Electric Aircraft First Flight

Range anxiety in a land-going electric vehicle is uncomfortable. You watch the battery percentage drop while calculating whether the nearest charger is close enough. In an electric aircraft, however, there is no roadside shoulder where you can wait for assistance. Battery anxiety has officially learned to fly.

Electric aircraft are not new, and neither is seeing one take to the skies. No, we are not talking about eVTOLs. We mean regular fixed-wing aircraft like the Rolls-Royce ACCEL, Airbus E-Fan 1.2, and Eviation Alice. That said, the machine from Heart Aerospace is no puny electric aircraft. It is big. So big that it has boldly claimed the title of the world’s largest electric aircraft.

Thankfully, Heart Aerospace’s X1 demonstrator completed its maiden flight without requiring an airborne charging cable. Measuring 32.3 m (106 feet) across, 23.2 m (76 feet) long, and weighing over 11,340 kg (25,000 pounds) at takeoff, it is the largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown.

The piloted flight took place at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York on August 12, 2026. Over 27 minutes, the X1 taxied, took off, climbed, maneuvered, and landed while reaching 335 m (1,100 feet) above ground level. Its electric propulsion system delivered over one megawatt of power.

Even more astonishingly, the flight consumed about US$5 worth of electricity. That would barely buy enough aviation fuel to make a conventional aircraft smell operational.

The X1 is a full-scale demonstrator supporting development of Heart’s 30-seat ES-30 regional aircraft. Clearly, electrification is no longer restricted to cars, buses, and enormous mining trucks. It has taken to the skies, where running out of charge would be considerably harder to explain to passengers.
