You know the nursery rhyme: “London Bridge is falling down, falling down… build it up with wood and clay.” Well, LEGO has other ideas. Instead of wood and clay, you’ll be “rebuilding” one of London’s most iconic bridges with a whole lot of plastic bricks—3,745 pieces, to be precise.
Perhaps one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks, Tower Bridge has finally been given its well-deserved place in the LEGO Architecture series. That’s pretty much like being knighted in an architectural sense, and perhaps a consolation prize for missing out on both the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the RIBA Stirling Prize. OK, that’s an exaggeration, but I think you get the idea.
Unlike most LEGO Architecture sets, the LEGO Architecture Tower Bridge (21067) is both an architectural model and a diorama. The included microscale vehicles—including the iconic red double-decker bus and several cars—along with the River Thames, complete with brick-built waves, bring the whole scene to life. It is, IMHO, the coolest LEGO Architecture set yet. Plus, it will make for a lovely addition for AFOLs and architecture enthusiasts who already have the LEGO Architecture Trafalgar Square. Though it’s a bummer they are not of the same scale.
Other details include raising central bascules, which can be displayed in either the raised or lowered position, and blue suspension-bridge spans, each featuring a coat of arms that nods to the first LEGO Tower Bridge set. When completed, the Tower Bridge stretches a space-demanding 89 cm (35 in.) wide, 19 cm (7 in.) deep, and 35 cm (13.5 in.) tall.
