LEGO’s New Pirate Ship Lets You Build It Three Different Ways

LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Iconic Pirate Ship (31387)

Most LEGO sets are build-and-display models with some level of playability. But the recent Smart Play and the interactive figures in the Mario series take playability to the next level. But to some, “play” means the building process. For those folks, there is Creator 3-in-1, a theme that lets builders take a model apart and rebuild it into something entirely different.

The new LEGO Iconic Pirate Ship (31387) embraces that very same philosophy by giving you a chance to build again and again. Notice I said “again” twice? That’s because this is a Creator 3-in-1 set. Your swashbuckling adventures do not stop with the main pirate ship battling a sea monster. You can take it apart and rebuild it into a buccaneer’s castle or two smaller pirate boats. And yes, each boat gets its very own pirate flag.

The large vessel is LEGO’s homage to the high-seas legend of giant tentacled creatures attacking seafaring vessels. The 1,074-piece set for kids aged 9 and up features a buildable sea monster with posable tentacles letting kids recreate the pirates’ worst nightmare.

The ship, which measures 39 cm (15.5 in.) long, 12 cm (5 in.) wide, and 30 cm (12 in.) tall, is loaded with delightful details. It features a moving anchor, posable sails, two cannons, a cabin furnished with a desk and chair, a moving ship’s wheel, a secret compartment with a treasure chest, and, for some reason, a crow’s nest. You can also reveal the toy ship’s hold by removing a section of the deck.

Meanwhile, the Buccaneer’s Castle build boasts a tower, pier, and palm tree, and it opens in the middle to reveal several rooms and a cave. The twin small boats build lets kids stage battles or simply set off on an adventure together to seek the fabled One Piece. Oh, wait. Not the same franchise. Anyways, the set comes with five pirate-themed minifigures, including a skeleton minifigure, plus a bunch of accessories like a sword, pistol, telescope, and map for even richer play.

The LEGO Iconic Pirate Ship (31387) is perfect for brick-built pirate ship collectors, joining a growing fleet of pirate-themed sets, including Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship, the dilapidated pirate ship from The Goonies, the run-aground pirate ship from the Pirates of Barracuda Bay set, and, of course, the Going Merry from the LEGO One Piece collection.

It is available as we speak for US$109.99.
