Unfortunately, the restomod of Bruce McLaren’s ride is not for you—or anyone else—to own. Thankfully, a modern iteration is coming your way, and it is called the McLaren McL 6GT.
Unveiled at Monterey Car Week 2026, the McL 6GT picks up where Bruce McLaren’s unfulfilled M6GT road-car dream left off. However, this is no retro body draped over modern machinery. McLaren has reinterpreted the idea using six additional decades of engineering, carbon fiber, and knowledge gained from making obscenely quick automobiles.
The essentials should delight anyone who thinks modern supercars need fewer screens and more involvement: V8 internal-combustion power, rear-wheel drive, hydraulic steering, and an authentic manual transmission. In fact, it is the first manual-equipped McLaren since the legendary F1 arrived in 1992. So, purists rejoice!
McLaren has yet to disclose the engine’s displacement, output, performance figures, weight, or price. What we do know is that the McL 6GT uses a full carbon-fiber monocoque and carbon-fiber bodywork, promising an excellent power-to-weight ratio and very little sympathy for your savings account.
Its low, wide shape draws heavily from the M6GT and the M6A Can-Am racer beneath it. A low nose flows into a tightly integrated cabin and ends at a distinctive Kammback tail. The original M6GT’s rear lights return as a modern “Racing Loop” motif, while Bruce McLaren’s number plate becomes a subtle body graphic. His signature appears in the engine bay, and a Speedy Kiwi is etched into the fuel-filler cap.
Inside, tactile aluminum controls, boxed quilting, exposed carbon fiber, and digital instruments mix old-school inspiration with current technology. The upright gearstick even contains a three-dimensional Speedy Kiwi.
The McL 6GT shown here is still a concept, but McLaren confirms that a production version will arrive in 2028 as a new, highly exclusive model beyond its regular portfolio. So yes, you may eventually own Bruce McLaren’s reborn dream. You merely need patience, a healthy bank account, and an excellent relationship with your McLaren dealer.
