After reconciling ourselves to the fact that there’s a movie based on die-cast vehicles, it is only natural that we now have to accept that there’s a diorama depicting the behind-the-scenes production of that movie. The movie in question is none other than Matchbox.
TBH, I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that a die-cast toy brand can be turned into a movie. But here we are, witnessing another strange moment in entertainment history. In that context, the Matchbox The Movie Director Diorama does not feel weird at all. After all, isn’t selling toys the movie’s ultimate life mission?
The Matchbox The Movie Director Diorama is a collector set that recreates director Sam Hargrave filming one of the movie’s chase scenes. The tiny filmmaker is joined by a chase-damaged 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback and a Mercedes-Benz G-Class serving as the camera car, complete with an articulating camera crane. It is Hollywood filmmaking compressed to 1:64 scale, where the director is small enough to be misplaced between sofa cushions.
The set is more than a shameless merchandise opportunity, though. It pays tribute to Hargrave’s actual production method. The director used Matchbox cars to block out action sequences and rehearse stunts before performing the same vehicular chaos with larger, expensive machinery.
Everything comes arranged inside a window box with an illustrated backdrop inspired by a high-octane moment from the film. One warning: only the Sam Hargrave mini figure is included. Any other tiny humans pictured are merely unpaid background talent and do not come with the set.
The Matchbox The Movie Director Diorama is available to pre-order from Mattel Creations for US$40. Meanwhile, Matchbox, the action-comedy starring John Cena, premieres on Apple TV on October 9, 2026. Man, how times have changed. Skipping theaters for a straight-to-VHS or DVD release used to be a major badge of dishonor. But somehow going straight to streaming platforms today is perfectly normal.
