Barbie may be a doll, but she is certainly no stranger to animated adventures, and she even had a blockbuster live-action movie. Having said that, she most certainly graces books, too. But as far as books go, this is the first: a novel.

Make no mistake. This is not a book about the iconic doll’s history, nor is it some made-for-kids adventure in print. Barbie: Dreamscape (ISBN: 978-1640366008), as it is called, is an upcoming 336-page young adult fantasy novel about an entirely new adventure set in a magical world created specifically for the book. And it isn’t penned by just anyone. It is written by #1 New York Times bestselling author Alex Aster, best known for the Lightlark series.
The story follows Barbie, a student at the enchanted Swancrest Academy in the kingdom of Heartland, where every graduate is destined to receive a magical “Fate” that defines their future. Barbie expects hers to be extraordinary, but instead she is declared Fateless, forcing her to leave the only world she has ever known on a journey filled with danger, discovery, and self-discovery. Along the way, she uncovers long-buried secrets while questioning whether destiny should really decide who a person becomes.
Barbie: Dreamscape blends fantasy, coming-of-age themes, and Barbie’s trademark optimism into what Mattel describes as a fresh chapter for the iconic brand—or, in business speak, an attempt to open up a whole new young adult segment. Presumably they still read. In any case, I take it as Mattel’s good-faith effort to encourage people to read (and perhaps, indirectly, get them off their digital addiction). Anyhoo, this marks another milestone in Barbie’s evolution—from fashion doll to animated star, Hollywood leading lady, and now the heroine of her very first original novel. Quite an achievement for a doll, don’t you think?
Barbie: Dreamscape will be available in 237 countries and territories beginning August 18, 2026.
