CaDA 1:8 Scale Lotus Exige Cup 430 (C61511)

CaDA is on a roll when it comes to 1:8 scale sets. It used to be just one 1:8 “flagship” set each year. But this year, there are going to be at least three. We already have the “dancing car” Yangwang U9, and as we have learned much earlier, the 1:8 Mercedes-AMG GT3 should be coming along later this year. The U9 set was a surprise product, but it wasn’t the only surprise CaDA pulled on us; there’s also this: the CaDA 1:8 Scale Lotus Exige Cup 430 (C61511).

Officially licensed by the British marque, the CaDA 1:8 Scale Lotus Exige Cup 430 uses 3,730 Technic-style elements to accurately recreate the low-slung, widebody design of one of Lotus’ modern icons—presented in the brand’s signature racing green colorway. For the uninitiated, the Exige Cup 430 was a track-focused sports car, released in 2017. And like the real deal, this 1:8 scale model has plenty to shout about.

It rocks specially molded transparent pieces for the headlights, a large rear wing (a.k.a. spoiler) with the Union Jack on the sides, exclusive “lightweight” wheels with Lotus logos, printed Lotus branding at the rear (between the taillights), and a detailed interior complete with dashboard (again, printed), gearshift, and whatnot.

Speaking of gearshift, though—it doesn’t actually operate the model’s functioning 10-position, 8-speed gearbox. Instead, shifting is done with a buildable “key” and “hole” system, known as the turning knob. Insert the turning knob—presumably made using a 12T double bevel gear and a cross axle—and you can cycle through the 8 forward speeds, put it into neutral, or engage the reverse gear.

The same method is used to open the ventilated trunk (or the ‘boot,’ if you prefer proper British English). When not in use, the turning knob can be stowed away behind the driver’s seat, keeping things functional without an unsightly protruding knob. Perhaps can take note of this.

The V6 engine has also been faithfully recreated, complete with the iconic red engine cover with Lotus branding. Its pistons, of course, move as the wheels turn. On top of that, the model features independent suspension all around, functional steering for the front wheels, opening doors, a removable roof, and—best of all—every bit of graphic detail is printed. Kudos to that, because I hate decals! Rounding things up is a commemorative collaboration plaque.

When completed, the model measures 53.8 cm long, 23.8 cm wide, and 16.9 cm high (that’s about 21.2 inches by 9.4 inches by 6.7 inches).

The CaDA 1:8 Scale Lotus Exige Cup 430 (C61511) has just launched in China with a list price of 1,099 yuan (~153 USD). And yes, it’s already discounted by 200 yuan, bringing the price down to 899 yuan [CH]* (~125 USD).
