I don’t have a lot of money, so every LEGO set that I buy is a calculated purchase. I was about to commit to the LEGO 1966 Ford GT40 MKII Race Car, and then this came up: LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 R REXY AO Racing Car (42224).

Now, I am undecided because I can only have one. Both look great. And so, yes, that right there is an officially licensed racing car, which we don’t see a lot in the LEGO space, and also the very reason worth buying, IMO. Ugh. Decision. Decision. Decision.
And this isn’t just some random license slapped on a green Porsche, by the way. This set recreates AO Racing’s Dino-themed GT3 R, complete with that oddly menacing dinosaur snout printed at the front.
The set packs 1,313 pieces of Technic goodness, including working suspension on all four wheels, a rear-wheel-drive setup with differential, and a six-cylinder boxer engine firing exactly as its real counterpart would. You also get doors and trunk that open, steering via a control knob, and synchronized air jacks so you can pretend you’re in the pit lane, yelling at invisible mechanics.
It also happens to be display-friendly, measuring about 39 cm long (15.4 inches), 16 cm wide (6.3 inches), and 10 cm tall (3.9 inches). In other words, large enough to impress guests, not large enough for anyone to judge your priorities.
Next year’s LEGO budgeting is doomed, because this Rexy beast drops on January 1 with a price tag of US$149.99.
