Ever look at your fridge and think, “I wish I could stick my collection of fridge magnets on the walls too”? Well, guess what? You actually can—with a little help from Rust-Oleum. The granddaddy of protective paint and coatings has a special product called Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Paint Primer that, as the name suggests, imbues any wall with magnetic properties. That’s right. This paint lets you take your fridge magnet obsession beyond the kitchen.

Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Paint Primer isn’t new, by the way. Apparently, it has existed for who-knows-how-long (update: at least 10 years now!). But now, there’s a new version that proudly claims to be “3x stronger.” I have no idea how strong is 3x. I guess it just translates to “very strong”?
The paint only comes in one color: gray (dark gray, to be precise). But since it’s a primer, it’s meant to hide beneath whatever shade you actually want. The top coat is not limited to latex paints. It works with Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Paint, so you can turn an entire wall into a football coaching board. The primer works on wood, metal, masonry, drywall, plaster—you name it. So, if you’ve ever dreamed of turning your walls into a magnet-friendly surface (and no judgment if you have), it’s now a reality.
Of course, reality has a price. A 1-quart (946 ml) can of Rust-Oleum Specialty Magnetic Paint Primer will set you back around US$50—that’s 2-3 times the cost of a regular “premium” primer. There’s also a 31 fl. oz. (917 ml) version priced at about US$42.25.
Now the only question is: how many coats will it take to hold up that oversized souvenir magnet from Vegas? Oh, Rust-Oleum isn’t the only brand of magnetic primer; there is another brand called Magnetize-It! which is a tad more affordable.
