As it turned out, IKEA’s collaboration with architecture-trained, fashion design and founder of street wear label Off-White, Virgil Abloh, on the Frakta bag is just the beginning. It was a prelude to a collection called MARKERAD. MARKERAD, according to the Swedish flatpack furniture specialist, is “a collection of first home must-haves that don’t force you to compromise on who you are.” Well, that sounds like artistic shit right there. As popular as Ikea may be, not everyone is fond of assembling flatpack furniture. The current solution is, pay for the delivery and assembly, but that may change in future and you can thank Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore for it. The university’s scientists have developed robots that negates the need for peeling through word-less instructions and juggling with the standard issued Allen key and your own screwdriver. When designers are cracking their brains for space-saving furniture, they probably need not look further than typical urban tiny spaces. But as it turns out, tiny spaces aren’t enough for Ikea. The Swedish furniture giant has sent some of the company’s designers to live inside the Mars simulator, so they’d have the first hand understanding of space constrain (pun not intended). And we are not even joking. This is happening right now and it will last for a full week. Continue reading Ikea Designers Live In Mars Simulator For Design Inspiration
I am sure you remember the hilarity that ensue after Balenciaga pulled off an upmarket and obviously, very pricey, knockoff of Ikea’s iconic blue Frakta. Up to today, we are not quite sure if it was intentional, but based on one previous design, we are not at all surprise if it was an intentional copycat. We do not know if Ikea did take legal action, but it sure did poke fun at the French luxury fashion house’s tote bag and it was nothing short of hilarious. Don’t you just love Ikea’s sense of humor? Shortly after, the Internet joined in the fun with a bunch of iconic blue tote bag-based creative creations. I am sure those are purely for fun because some of them, though managed to put a smile our faces, looks rather comfortable to be use, or wear. I am sure you have heard about the hilarity that ensues after Balenciaga unveiled a $2,000+ bag that has an uncanny resemblance to Ikea’s iconic 99 cents tote bag. Ever since Ikea humorously shot back at the French luxury fashion label, there have been a series of what we called Frakta bag hack, including a pair of not quite Frakta related sneakers (which is awesome, btw). Anyways, speaking of “Frakta bag hacks,” they are actually crazy cool and it ranges from face mask to bikini top to different bag styles. Hell, those Frakta-based products are so cool that you’d wish they were real products. Trust me, you will never look at the Frakta bag the same way again after this. Thanks to Balenciaga $2,144 interpretation of Ikea’s 99 cents Frakta tote bag, Ikea is having quite a lot of attention of late and the Internet, had some fun too, including a mega shoe lover, Instagram user Brucehatoo. Riding on the Ikea hype, Brucehatoo came up with the idea of photoshopping a pair of Yeezy sneakers into Ikea Frakta-inspired kicks which he then posted on his Instagram account to much rave reception. In fact, I saw came across Bruce’s ‘creation’ a few days ago and was wondering to myself, what if Ikea really collaborate with Adidas? Wouldn’t it be cool? Usually, when we talk about knock-off, the non-original product (or sometime, idea) is of something poorly made and cheaply priced, but that’s not what happen in the case of Balenciaga’s $2,145 Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag. So, you must asking: “who knock-off Balenciaga?” Well, the thing is, Balenciaga’s Arena appears to be the knock-off in this instant and it is kind of funny, because it looks way too similar to Ikea’s iconic Frakta tote bag (not the redesigned one though). Yes. You heard that right. Balenciaga’s luxury example looks like the trusty, big blue bag that you use to shop around in Ikea which you can also bring home for mere 99 cents.
