IKEA New Paper-based Fitting Bag

If you’ve ever bought IKEA furniture, you know the ritual: open the flatpack, fish out the infamous plastic bag full of screws, bolts, and that tiny hex key you’ll curse by hour two. That little bag has just received a sustainable makeover. IKEA is phasing out its plastic fitting bags and replacing them with paper-based ones. No, this isn’t just another Scandinavian design flex—it’ll slash 1,400 tons of plastic a year. That’s a lot of Allen keys in eco-friendly coats.

Starting FY25, new lines like STOCKHOLM 2025 and popular ranges like PAX and KALLAX will start rocking the new paper pouch. The bags are made using wood waste, produced in-house, and—despite a thin plastic coating for durability—are fully recyclable. IKEA’s end goal? Ditch virgin plastic completely by 2028.

It might seem like a small change, but when you’re selling millions of flatpacks a year, even swapping out that tiny screw sack becomes a big win for the planet. Plus, it’s nice to know your relationship-testing weekend project now comes with a side of sustainability.
