Most of us won’t admit that, when it comes to charging, we are as clueless about what is going on as a tourist without a map. All we know is that the device is charging. We do not know whether it is charging at the correct wattage. Neither do we know whether the device is fast-charging, let alone how charging affects its battery health.
Charger and gadget accessories maker Torras is determined to make these unknowns known with its adorable Big Eye Smart Display Charger. This charger uses a built-in display to present previously unseen information right before your “eyes.”
The brilliant thing about this adorable gadget accessory is that it recognizes the device plugged into it, understands its charging needs, and responds to every change throughout the charging process. And while it does all that, you, as the user, can see the charging status at a glance.
The screen is angled at 45 degrees. It shows you the charging protocol, device battery level, and more. And it does not present these insights like a lab report; the Torras Big Eye Smart Display Charger has animated expressions that make it feel like it is alive.
It provides “emotional feedback” based on the charging status. For example, when the phone’s battery is below 20 percent, it enters a “big bite” animation in which it chows down on some food. During steady charging, i.e., between 20 and 80 percent, it appears to be working out. Then, at 80 percent, it enters battery-protection mode, with the Big Eye character sipping a drink through a straw. Finally, when all is done, it celebrates by scattering little flowers.
The animations are just the entrée; tapping the charger invokes random expressions. Tapping and holding displays the device being charged, the charging power, and the charging status. But don’t do it too quickly in succession, as it will get angry.
The craziest thing about this charger, IMHO, is that it actually has haptic feedback with every tap. And believe it or not, Torras has stuffed a gyroscope into it, so that dear little Big Eye will always remain upright, even if the charger has to be plugged in upside down.
Fun aside, the real power of this device is its ability to recognize the connected device—it tells you what it is on the display the moment you plug it in—and then select the optimum charging power for it.
It can recognize an iPhone, iPad, or MacBook and adjust the output accordingly. It can activate full-speed 27 W fast charging for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, 45 W fast charging for the iPad, and close to 60 W for devices powered by an M1 chip. Yes. It can even tell which M-series chip your MacBook is equipped with.
As mentioned, the charging process is very dynamic. The charger adjusts its output based on the device’s battery status. You know, fast-charging at a low battery level, steady charging during the middle stage, and trickle charging on the final leg to protect the battery.
It does all this while retaining a compact, easy-to-carry form factor with foldable prongs. The Torras Big Eye Smart Display Charger has been launched in China. Prices vary between sellers, but generally range from 210 to 280 yuan (about US$31–41). I found one on Taobao going for just 175 yuan [CH]* (around US$26).
