Honor Magic V Flip Smartphone

Honor has a lot of experience engineering and manufacturing large folding screen devices like the Magic V2, but it has yet to jump on the small folding phone aka the vertical folding phone aka the flip phone bandwagon like its competitors, well, that’s until now. The former Huawei sub-brand has revealed its first flip phone this week.

Dubbed Honor Magic V Flip [CH], it continues the brand’s obsession with thinness. The Magic V Flip is a mere 7.15 mm thin when opened and just 14.89 mm when closed—making it a truly pocketable flip phone. And oh, before we forget, this phone has a collaborative model with renowned fashion designer Professor Jimmy Choo. However, we do not have details on this model.

Anyhoo… moving on… this device stood out most when it is closed—thanks to its 4-inch external display—which is possibly the largest in the market right now—with an incredible 85% ultra-high screen-to-body ratio. Finally, the market has a flip phone with an external display that is actually useful.

The external display/secondary display, which boasts 405 ppi, boasts an OLED display with LTPO technology that affords it a 0.1-120 Hz refresh rate. This display further touts 1,600 nits peak brightness, 2,160 Hz PWM dimming, supports Dolby Vision, an AI sleep aid display, and natural light eye protection.

The 4-inch display may be The secondary display may be one large display but it is cleverly divided into zones to maximize the use and information display. There is the clock and day display section on the right of the screen—just above the dual cameras, a main area for the apps on the left. That’s the default.

When watching a video, it adapts into a horizontal display with controls below it. I am not sure how practical is it but you can even video call using the external display if you so desire. The external display is, of course, customizable with widgets and stuff, plus it has NFC too, so you can use your transport card and whatnot without unfolding the phone. Actually, I believe most flip phones let you do that.

On the outside display is home to two cameras: a 112° super wide-angle/macro camera (2.5 cm) and a 50 MP 1/1.56” Sony IMX906 sensor camera with f1.9 aperture and OIS. Meanwhile, the main display has a 50 MP Sony IMX816 AF hole-punch camera.

Speaking of the main display, the device opens to a 1-120 Hz 6.8-inch display that features Ultra-dynamic color display technology.

The display boasts 3,000 nits local peak brightness, BT.2020 color gamut, 1.07 billion color depth, Full definition video quality enhancement, and supports Dolby Vision, and DCI-P3 cinematic wide color gamut.

Like most recent vertical folding phones it touts dual-screen previewing when imaging and allows for DV-style videoing. In addition, the camera supports 4K time-lapse photography.

In the hinge department, it employs Honor’s “luban” hinge featuring Honor’s self-developed shield steel that offers ultra-high strength, durability, and reliability. The screen further touts an ultra-strong support via a steel foil that has a strength of up to 1,800 MPA. Honor said this result is super light folding creases and will look like new even after many uses.

The new Honor Magic V Flip is powered by the 4 nm process Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform and benefits from Honor-developed RF-enhanced chip C1+ that boasts signal strength, enabling smoother calls when on high-speed rails, faster network access in lifts, and smooth video streaming when commuting underground.

Fast heat dissipation is also one of the many selling points of this device. The device is outfitted with an ultra-thin liquid cooling system featuring 0.25 mm ultra-thin liquid cooling VC, and 2,300 mm2 ultra-large heat dissipation area.

These combined with cross-axis graphene with ultra-high thermal conductivity, allow heat to be conducted quickly, resulting in high heat dissipation efficiency.

A few other notables include Wi-Fi 6, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, GPS (GPS/AGPS/GLONASS/Beidou/Galileo), stereo dual speaker, and a 4,800 mAh battery with 66 W super fast charging. I don’t believe it has wireless charging.

The new Honor Magic V Flip is launched in the China market with a starting price of 4,999 yuan [CH] (around US$690).
