Well, what do you know? Honor, the former sub-brand of Huawei, has yet another foldable phone. Disregarding the dates, this would be its fourth folding phone in less than 12 12-month period. That is a lot of folding phones for any brand. However, the thing is, technically, this new folding device isn’t new. It is a cobranded Magic V2 folding phone with, wait for it… Porsche Design.
I know right? I sure did not see that coming. Honor has inherited its former parent brand’s partner too. Surprise it did not partner with Leica. While Honor Magic V2 RSR Porsche Design [CH] is based on the V2 announced in July 2023, aesthetically, it looks nothing like it.
It has a glass back cover with a center raised like a mountain ridge much like a spine running across the back. This raised ridge extends the entire height and aligns with a newly designed camera module. The camera module has a slanted bottom which makes it a trapezoid and now it has a beautiful chamfered bezel too.
It may just be a back glass but it totally screams Porsche. And oh, it only comes in Agate Gray because, you know, Porsche. The color is specially concocted by specialists at the factory in Stuttgart to recreate the metallic paint job found on Porsche cars.
Finishing touches include Honor and Porsche Design branding on the glass back, as well as the Porsche Design anniversary logo engraved on the exterior of the hinge of the phone.
Back on December 14, Porsche Design revealed a strategic partnership with Honor to create innovative high-end electronic devices. The Honor Magic V2 RSR Porsche Design is the first product announced in China on January 11, 2024, China time. On a side note, the vanilla Magic V2 will see a global launch on January 16.
Anyway, the RSR retains the V2’s ridiculous thin profile of 9.9 mm when closed and 4.7 mm when opened. And it now weighs in at 234g, which is between the weight of the vegan leather V1 and the glass back V2.
On the inside, the Android 13-based MagicOS 7.2 gets the black-gold Porsche Design UI. Beyond the cosmetics, the Honor Magic V2 RSR Porsche Design is identical to the Magic V2, right down to the camera system. It is, however, offered only in one color option and in 16 GB + 1 TB configuration.
The new Honor Magic V2 RSR Porsche Design is available to order in China via Honor web store for 15,999 yuan [CH] which is around 2,253 American dollars based on the current going rate.
